Quarantine Diaries of a Drag Queen
By Victoria Carriáge

Dear Diary, its been a few weeks since my last confession…  I’ve followed government guidelines and made sure that I’ve stayed at home apart from essential shopping and work and to be honest … ITS BORING.

Six weeks of lockdown is enough to drive anyone insane and I’m feeling it. As a social creature I’m so used to being around people all of the time, hence why I love being at Glitterbomb so much. The crowd, the atmosphere, the music but above all else seeing my friends. I for one cannot wait for this to be over and to be back on that stage performing cheesy pop hits.

So what have I been doing for the last few weeks? Its no secret that I’m a very old lady and true to this I have been spending time buying, potting, and learning about house plants and while I know that sounds incredibly boring its actually been a lot of fun. I’ve managed to kill a succulent (which I’ve been told is pretty hard to do) and I’ve revived an Orchid which is now in full bloom. Ok, you’re right … it is boring! But I think that it has been really important that during this time being locked away inside we learn and gain new skills. Aside from the boring horticulture, I’ve also tried my hand at something a little more useful.

We are all aware that Season 2 of Drag Race UK has been suspended and postponed due to the health crisis. Hopefully, filming will resume once again as soon as the virus is under control. I’ve been following the Reddit rumours and I’m pretty sure I know a few of the cast for this season. I have to say that I’m very excited to have DRUK back on our screens again (no shade to the Americans but the Brits do it so well). With the thought of DRUK fresh in my mind, I’ve treated myself to a sewing machine. You won’t be surprised to know that I have the dream of one day following in the footsteps of Gothy Kendoll. We all know that sewing is a BIG part of drag race and that making a decent costume is almost as highly favoured as a good impersonation in the Snatch Game. Now I don’t want to get ahead of myself, I’m no Vivienne Westwood just yet, in fact, I’m still only learning the basics of what stitches to use and how to tread the machine but it’s a start. I’ve seen so many queens during lock down turning their hands to new skills and its been really lovely watching them develop. Special shoutout to Glitterbomb’s very own Amanda Bang who’s started editing her own videos. If you haven’t checked out some of the stuff she’s been working on you really are missing out! She has produced some amazing stuff and honestly, I’m super proud of her.

There you have it, a brief look into the quarantined life of this bitter old drag queen and her plants. Im about to sit down with enough Chinese for 4 people, a very large gin and watch Miss Congeniality and Miss Congeniality 2 … because what else is there to do!?

Stay safe and look after yourselves.

Much Love
