“I Will Survive” by Gloria Gaynor

“I Will Survive” had a particularly large influence within the LGBT community. Mostly because the lack of acceptance of LGBT+ individuals, especially at the time of the song’s release. The song is often referred to as a gay anthem because of this. People in the LGBT community have said they identified with “I Will Survive” because the “textual message of defiant and enduring presence was already well-tailored to queer identification needs, but this message and the song took on an even deeper meaning with the dawn of the AIDS epidemic in the 1980s”.

“Vogue” by Madonna

“Look around: Everywhere you turn is heartache.” This song recorded at the height of America’s AIDS crisis and inspired by New York’s underground gay ball scene that was famously documented in the 1991 film Paris Is Burning, This song makes you want to stop what you’re doing and VOGUE.

“I’m Coming Out” by Diana Ross

Chic’s Nile Rodgers was inspired to write this funky 1980 gem for Diana Ross after seeing multiple drag queens dressed as the iconic singer at a gay disco in New York. The song hit the charts and became very popular, still remaining a top 10 anthem for LGBT+ community. 

“Y.M.C.A.” by Village People

Seen as an anthem and proved to be a smash hit still to this day. This song is played at any cheese room and no one can resist doing the moves (especially after a couple of cocktails).

“Free” by Ultra Naté

A global smash for Ultra Naté in 1997, “Free” with lyrics such as “You’ve got to live your life—do what you want to do,” encourages people to be themselves and became an anthem for the community at the time.

“It’s Raining Men” by The Weather Girls

Gay icons Diana Ross, Donna Summer, Cher and Barbra Streisand all turned down this campy composition but the Weather Girls snatched it up in 1982 and it became a hit. Played most weeks at Glitterbomb its the ultimate camp party song! Disco never dies and neither does this song.

“Born This Way” by Lady Gaga

“No matter gay, straight, or bi Lesbian, transgendered life” there is a reason this song is blaring from clubs to pride parades and has inspired a countless number of people. Lady Gaga is a true gay icon. 

“Believe” by Cher

There is no question Cher is a Gay icon and when songs like Believe are played in the clubs you can’t help but sing along to this feel-good track. This is the gay anthem that needs no explanation.
